The Bacolet Beach Club
There aren’t many hotels in the world where you can wander down through a jungle to your own private beach…
Huge rainforest trees are dotted around the slopes of The Bacolet Beach Club and vines and creepers twist and turn through the foliage.
The cries of the Chachalaca, Tobago’s national bird can be heard throughout the grounds.
When they spot one, they assume the dive position with swept back wings. Suddenly these awkward, ponderous flyers become sleek missiles.
Dozens of frigate birds soar effortlessly above the pelicans – sandpipers rush back and forth in front of the incoming sea, pecking and burrowing into the sand in search of dinner.
Rooms are Smart and Simple
Huge almond trees throw a large circle of shade around the sand which appears to be a mix of volcanic and coral.
Gray kingbirds twitter and fuss, and, as the evening draws in, get more excited as they pick off the insects gathering at twilight.
The bay is small and enclosed and private means private. It’s not overlooked or visited by anyone other than guests and staff.
It takes a day to get your bearings at the Bacolet Beach Club.
There are three swimming pools and off the steps leading down to the beach there are shaded platforms overlooking the sea where you can hide with a cold beer.
Across the road is the Half Moon Blue Hotel, which is the owner’s original business.
Rooms are smart and simple at The Bacolet Beach Club.
Mine was dominated by a huge queen-size bed – and gold was the theme.
Gold and ebony furniture, black and gold headboard and tastefully finished fittings with his and her basin and a huge walk-in shower.
Friendly and efficient staff
The balcony of course surveyed the sea and one of those large trees – perhaps a mahogany – but certainly older than the hotel itself, towered over the building, a reminder that this island and its tourist industry are working together with nature.
It’s an unusual place, reflecting the cosmopolitan and worldly outlook of owner – former model Gloria Jones-Knapp.
The reception area leads to a “runway” – a glimpse into her past and a great place for a bride to walk down the aisle.
The staff are friendly and efficient and it’s not long before you are on first name terms.
The service and food in the restaurant is excellent. A new block has just opened and the hotel is set fair for the future.
