Back Bay
A beach which is not far from civilisation, but feels remote and isolated.
Not even the locals…
Just a couple of hundred metres from the busy Mount Irvine beach facility, Back Bay is one of those beaches you only dream about.
Back Bay is deserted – even on a Sunday in high season.
A lot of locals don’t know of it and finding it may require a little help from a Mount Irvine lifeguard.
Back Bay is secluded and has a feeling of remote isolation, despite the proximity of the road and Mount Irvine itself, one of the most popular beaches in Tobago for sand and surf.
Sea grape, (it’s a tree not a vine, but the fruit resembles a grape!) has a hold in the sand behind the beach, offering shade and privacy – though there’s no one other than a few crab and sandpiper birds to watch over you here. The place is all the better for that.
Take a Picnic
There are rocky outcrops and pools to explore but of course no vendors, so no umbrellas or cold drinks for sale.
Unfortunately, some time in the distant past Back Bay was the scene of a robbery and the beach comes with a health warning.
If you’re driving you can park on the road just a couple of hundred metres north of the bustle and noise of Mount Irvine beach. Or park at Mount Irvine and walk.
