Bloody Bay, Tobago
A little further up the north coast, is the last accessible beach on the northern Caribbean coast before the road turns east and heads through the rainforest to Roxborough.
The name allegedly comes from a naval battle around 1666 when an English fleet defeated a combined Dutch and French fleet.
The battle was so bloody the sea turned red.
The historical basis for this legend is flimsy, to say the least, but the name has stuck.
What can’t be disputed is that Bloody Bay is a pretty, sheltered beach with clear waters.
And usually fairly quiet too.
