Nylon Pool
Cool Runnings. Guides know their stuff

Nylon Pool

Across the Caribbean, you’ll find a number of vessels called Cool Runnings, named after the Jamaican Bobsleigh team from the 1988 Olympics.

This one goes out to No Man’s Land, Buccoo Reef and the famous Nylon Pool. Pick up the boat from Store Bay…

Rich Variety of Marine Life

For $100TT, it’s excellent value and the guides know their stuff, even if they do play the Soca music too loud and clearly have an eye for the ladies.

The wind here blows across the Bon Accord Lagoon making the shallow water perfect for wind and kitesurfers who set off from Pigeon Point.

Below the surface, lies a rich variety of marine life. The lagoon seems to stretch for miles and at its outer edge the water depth drops to more than one hundred feet. Here on the ocean side of the reef, the mega fauna hunt.

But inside the lagoon, snorklers can see plenty of coral and fish life.

Bon Accord Lagoon

That wind means the current is strong. You may have to hang on to a rope to prevent yourself drifting from the boat if you’re not up to swimming against the flow of water.

But there’s plenty to see.

An alternative is to hire a fishing boat to take you out and keep an eye on you…

But do not anchor in the coral. It’s already under threat from pollution and global warming and is a marine park.

The Nylon Pool

The commentary from the Cool Runnings crew who have clearly done their homework is excellent.

There was an awareness of the differences made to the reef by global warming and a good knowledge of the different coral and fish.

And then there’s the Nylon Pool… This shallow stretch of water has various myths associated with it.

Bathing here will take 10 years off your life…. the ancient decomposed coral sand is good for the skin and if lovers kiss under the water, their union will last forever.

Nylon Pool

How many of these were dreamt up by Princess Margaret, the sister to Queen Elizabeth is unknown.

She came here on honeymoon, and is credited with renaming the area the Nylon Pool as the water was so smooth it reminded her of her stockings.

Did she kiss her new husband Antony Armstrong-Jones underwater? They were divorced 18 years later.

The trip also takes in No Man’s Land…

No Man’s Land

No Man’s Land

A fragile strip of land which for a few hours each day becomes a party venue. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea…

The only access to this deserted and beautiful island which looks across across to Buccoo Reef and Nylon Pool is by boat.

If you go in the middle of the day you’ll share it with the party-goers.  So unless it’s a booze cruise you’re after, go at a different time and find your own boat…
