Stonehaven Bay

Stonehaven Bay

A lovely beach, but be careful where you sit!

Stonehaven Bay

Grafton Beach is on Stonehaven Bay, a beautiful crescent of golden sand, fringed, yes fringed, with coconut trees.

So, careful where you sit. The falling nut can kill and other than the erratic driving of some locals, is probably the worst that you have to worry about in Tobago.

Beach almond trees offer shade and shield the beach from a road where there is plenty of parking.

A Real Beauty

Houses and hotels are hidden on the slopes above Stonehaven Bay.

There is surf here too, so some care is needed. There’s certainly enough to boogie board or body surf if you fancy a bit of excitement.

Further out there are currents which you need to be aware of.

There are restaurants and the occasional tourist.

Stonehaven Bay is a real beauty.

The beach is also famous as a nesting site for the leather back turtle. It’s an endangered species, which means it is very likely to become extinct.

The turtles come ashore between March and June to lay their eggs.

The leather back turtle is a giant of the natural world.

It can sometimes measure as long as 10 feet (3 metres) but are commonly about 6 feet (1.83m) long and weigh about 1000 pounds (450kgs).
